He Ain't Heavy, He's My Little Brother

A staple of the Columbus music scene closes its doors for the last time tomorrow. Little Brothers, once known as Stache's, is ceasing due to a lease dispute. I've seen many good shows there over the years and I hope its passing doesn't mean we've seen the last of artists like James McMurtry coming thru town. Indpendently owned homes of live music are becoming a thing of the past. The Wal Martization of America continues.....There are rumors that the local shed formerly known as Polaris Ampitheatre is up for sale. I won't mourn its passing but if it does close up shop artists big and small may be skipping Columbus completely.

Melodicrock.com reports this morning that the David Lee Roth led Van Halen reunion tour is back on. I'd love to see it but I won't believe it until I see it in person. VH with DLR was one of the great American bands ever. I loathe the Hagar era and do not recoginize the Cherone record as part of the holy canon. Those VH records with Roth are timeless and still rip your face off.

The Transformers movie opens tomorrow. The NYTimes says as a film it makes a pretty good commercial:http://movies2.nytimes.com/2007/07/02/movies/02tran.html

Apple's launch of the Iphone was quite the success. Over 500,000 sold in the first weekend. Just imagine how many more they could have sold if it were also a weight loss supplement or assisted with erectile dysfunction.

60,000 Brits with nothing better to do came out to remember Princess Diana....again. http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2007-07-01-diana-concert_N.htm

Wish I had one near me....as the Simpsons movie approaches its release date 7-11 remakes some of its stores as Kwik-E-Mart...Apu not included: http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-ap-7-eleven-kwik-e-mart,1,2611387.story?coll=chi-bizfront-hed

While Dubya and Putin continue their man-date or "bromance" (thanks Rescue Me) in New England, another one of Dubya's poorly thought out lame brain ideas gets shot down:http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-missiles2jul02,0,4834011.story?coll=la-home-center

Big sports weekend....Mike Hargrove quits as manager of the Mariners despite their 8 game winning streak (burn out victim)...Jerry Narron canned as manager of the Reds (cuz ya know its his fault the bullpen sucks)....Barry Bonds elected as starter to the All Star game (wouldn't have happened if the game weren't in San Francisco)....NHL free agency started...and the Jackets sign no one of note. Came across this article over on Deadspin.com.....is that trophy what I think it is?:http://deadspin.com/sports/cherished-dildos/christie-kerr-is-going-to-celebrate-274075.php

More crap as it happens....

Hate to see Little Brothers go, it's a shame that Dan's throwing in the towel as far as starting over again, but I can't say I blame him.

Good riddance to Polaris, the least rockin' rock and roll venue in Ohio.

The Cherone-era VH was aptly titled, it was already pre-priced for the used bin at Used Kids.

Well said OMOM...Never saw a show in Polaris that didn't end early due to curfew. Last years Springsteen show ended 3 tunes early compared to other venues on the tour. Not to mention the decibel issue. My guess is the Polaris site becomes condos, tho it does look like a Wal Mart waiting to happen.

I don't blame Dan Dugan for throwing in the towel. Campus and the Short North were the best locations for a club like that.

Great comment on the Cherone VH. Only cd I ever got free with purchase of batteries at Best Buy.
